cost: $120 | time: 4-6 weeks
This special process combines swirls of transparent colour and small amounts of cremains within the glass matrix to create a treasured heirloom. Because such a small amount of ashes are required, Cremation Glass Keepsakes are a creative alternative or addition to a cremation memorial service, scattering of ashes or traditional urn. Multiple family members can even have their own Keepsake.
How it Works
Each keepsake requires one level teaspoon of ashes. If mailed, the ashes should be sealed and doubled-bagged as required by the post office. Upon arrival, a unique number is assigned to identify and ensure safe return of your loved one’s ashes throughout the storage, creation and shipment of your Cremation Glass Keepsake. Visitors are always welcome to watch and photograph their keepsake being created. It takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
Starting with a small ball of clear molten glass, your loved one’s ashes are combined with coloured glass crystals of your choosing, until they are encased and fused inside the glass matrix.
Keeping the glass in constant motion, one hand turns the pipe while the other shapes using a wooden block. The glass cools throughout the process becoming unworkable and is reheated in large furnace, called the glory hole.
The calcium phosphates inside the ashes create a variety of white flecks, bubbles and mysterious colours that are as truly one-of-a-kind. After the final shape is formed, the keepsake is placed in a temperature-controlled kiln to slowly cool. Orders are packaged with the utmost care and include tracking information. Any unused ashes will be returned with your finished Cremation Glass Keepsake with a Certificate of Authenticity.
